THE DOC AND THE FIX: Yes, for all you who wondered, there is one degree of separation between Albert Schweitzer and baseball, and he lives in Sausalito. Psychiatrist and drug specialist Eugene Schoenfeld, who wrote about mind-altering drugs as Dr. Hip(pocrates), did an externship at the Schweitzer Hospital in Gabon in 1960, and returned later for six months of research studies. Schoenfeld's great uncle Arnold Rothstein fixed the 1919 World Series (the story told in "Eight Men Out") by bribing members of the Chicago Black Sox. Uncle Arnold also mentored Meyer Lansky.
